Witch’s Rock

Located about 55km north of Tamarindo, Witch’s Rock sits in Santa Rosa National Park. When the swells come in and the wind blows offshore, Witch’s Rock produces some amazing barrels. It’s best surfed in the rainy season (summer) and between mid and high tide. Because the beach is so large and the wave produces several peaks, one of the benefits of surfing Witch’s Rock is the lack of congestion on such a world-class wave.

Playa Hermosa

There are several beaches called Playa Hermosa in Costa Rica, but wére talking about the beach just south of Jacó. Being relatively close to San Jose, this break can get somewhat crowded. On bigger days with a southwest, you’ll get waves reaching 10+ feet and barrelling perfectly. The black sand beach produces the best swells from mid to high tide, and there is a rocky bottom. On smaller days or days without offshore wind, you may find a fair amount of surfers in the lineup, but not near as many as nearby Jacó.

Salsa Brava

Salsa brava is an intense reef break only suitable for intermediate or advanced surfers. When an swell comes in from the east or northeast with wind from the south or southwest, Salsa Brava can truly fire. Generally in the 6 foot range, they can climb up to 15 feet with the right swells and conditions. Located on the Caribbean side of the country in the province of Limón, this isn’t the easiest wave to get to. The town of Puerto Viejo has quite the party vibe, and there’s plenty of other stuff to do in the area.
