Chill, laid-back surf town

Not a ton of tourism or development

Surf Season in Uvita

The best time surf in Uvita is definitely during the wet season, or summer months. The waves will be much cleaner and more consistent, usually in the 3-6 foot range. In the winter, you definitely can still surf here, especially if you’re a beginner. However, you will probably find more chop and closeouts. For beginner surfers, the inside is home to whitewater waves year-round!

Where to Surf in Uvita

There are several places to surf in Uvita, but the most popular is at the south end of Parque Nacional Marino Ballena. You will have to pay a small fee as it’s a national park, but you get a pass for the whole day. If the swell is coming more from the south, you can go up to the north end of the whale tail to get a nice point break. There are nice sandy bottoms, making it a great place for beginners.

Surf Camps and Classes in Uvita

  • Bodhi Surf and Yoga - Definitely the best surf camp in the area in our opinion. They even made our list of the best surf and yoga camps in Costa Rica. They have one week and two week camps. Beautiful grounds, relaxing atmosphere, and lots of opportunities to practice yoga and meditation!

  • Casa Tiburón - Small little place to rent boards. We rented our boards here when we were last in Uvita, and he had a solid selection and good prices. Also lots of friendly cats!

Other Things to Do in Uvita

We were in Uvita in 2024, and here are a few things we checked out that we recommend:

  • Kinsú Restaurant - A little restaurant in Uvita that we ate at several times. Super nice staff, healthy meals, and fun atmosphere. We ate breakfast here a few times (delicious) and the dinners were fun and much more lively.

  • Catarata Uvita - An awesome waterfall just inland from the main town. There’s a nice smoothie bar at the top, and you can easily spend a couple hours here. There’s a waterfall you can climb and slide down, places to jump from, and big natural pools to swim in.
