The Best Big Waves

Pascuales, Colima

Zicatela, Oaxaca

Isla Todos Santos, Baja

Pascuales, Colima

Boca de Pascuales, Colima is the home stomping ground of pro surfer Alan Cleland, Jr. It’s a wave that should not be taken lightly. In the summer months, the waves are gigantic. One big upside is that the waves in Pascuales are incredibly consistent in July and August. The canyon offshore causes a huge A-frame beach break to form, and it packs some power. A long beach, the best waves are right at the river mouth at medium tide.

Zicatela, Oaxaca

Located in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Zicatela is known as the Mexican Pipeline. It’s one of the most famous waves in the world, known for its speed and size. This heavy beach break pumps when the swell comes from the south or southwest and can barrel massively. During mid or high tide when the swells and wind line up correctly, Zicatela produces arguably the best wave in Mexico. It’s not an easy paddle-out, and because the waves are coming from deep in the Pacific they pack quite the mighty punch.

Isla Todos Santos, Baja California Sur

Killers sits on Islas de Todos Santos in Baja California. This is not to be confused with the town of Todos Santos in Cabo. Located on an island just off the coast of Ensenada, this is probably the biggest and most powerful wave in the country. This wave is more of a big wave surfing spot than a traditional surfing spot. It can easily grow to over 20 feet, and is often compared to Mavericks or Jaws. There are tons of exposed rocks, and the bottom is quite rocky itself.
