Sayulita, Nayarit
Simply put, Sayulita is primarily a beginner surf spot. The waves at the main beach are perfect for first-timers or those hoping to sharpen their surfing skills. There are also numerous surf spots nearby that offer mellow breaks, sandy bottoms, and surf schools. As you can see in the image, Sayulita is blessed with a very consistent swell year-round. It’s super busy in the high season (winter), but there are quieter waves than the main break in town. In the offseason, you’ll find far fewer surfers in the water, but just as many schools, coaches, and opportunities to grow as a surfer.
Playa Cerritos, Los Cabos
Located in Baja California Sur, Los Cabos is home to quite a few different waves for different skill levels. One of these is Playa Cerritos, about 45 minutes north of the main town. It’s one of the best places for beginners to surf in Mexico, as it has no shortage of whitewash to help first-timers learn the basics. You may also find more green waves toward the end of the beach. The downside is that Cerritos often gets crowded with surf schools and camps, but not so crowded that you can’t find a wave.
Playa Carizalillo, Puerto Escondido
Puerto Escondido is perhaps the premier surfing destination in Mexico, located in the southern state of Oaxaca. In Puerto Escondido, you’ll find a town completely focused on surf. There are a few waves here that are advanced or pro-level, but Playa Carizalillo has something to offer the newcomers to the surf scene. Sitting in a beautiful bay, it’s probably one of the prettiest places to surf in Mexico. There’s a fair amount of whitewash and small green waves, and many options for surf schools and camps.
