Surf Season in Champerico

Champerico is best surfed in the summer, when the waves climb a bit and the wind is more mellow. Unlike other surf spots in Guatemala, Champerico really just is best in the summer. Winter months still offer a solid wave, but the summer months offer a real, big, clean wave. It is often overhead, and can go even bigger. Also, if you go out in the morning, most of the locals will still be asleep. As there aren’t many tourists here, you are way more likely to have the sets all to yourself at dawn than in the afternoon.

Where to Surf in Champerico

One of the nice things about surfing Champerico is that the waves are super spread out. The long beach offers breaks that have multiple peaks, so surfers aren’t congested into one spot. At the northwest end of the beach, there are a few jettys that produce a lovely left, one of the few lefts it seems in Guatemala. It’s not really big, but can pack quite a punch for its size.
