Surf Season in Iztapa
The best time to surf Iztapa, Guatemala, as with other breaks in the area, is summer (wet season). It may be a bit rainy, but you’ll find bigger swells, cleaner waves, and more consistent days. During the winter, it can still pump up to 4 or 5 feet, but often gets choppy or peaky. Even in the best months, Iztapa is rarely crowded. You’ll see other surfers out there, but nothing compared to some of the more popular surf spots in Central America.
Where to Surf in Iztapa
The best place to surf in Iztapa is right at the opening to the sea. Depending on swell direction, you can get solid swells off the points here. The point of the channel creats a solid right-hand point break that’s best for intermediates or advanced surfers. For beginners, you can find smooth and smaller waves coming in through the channel. This is where you’ll find surf schools and lessons happening, as the waves are fairly consistent and predictable.
