Best Advanced Waves in Guatemala

You might not find a giant DOH wave every day in Guatemala, but there are several spots that can really fire.

The Best Big Waves

Sipicate

El Paredón

Iztapa

Sipicate

Sipicate is at the northwestern end of these surf spots. During the summer months, this wave can absolutely pump. The spot to be for confident intermediates and advanced surfers is right in front of the lagoon. From June to September, the waves often hollow out here and can go 6-7ft+. For their size, these waves are impressively powerful. They pack a punch, and can be super speedy rides. In our opinion, this is the type of wave that is somehow more intense than it looks like it will be.

El Paredón

El Paredón has a lot of nice beginner waves, but the summer months bring some serious swells. Going up to 6ft+ in July and August, the point of the rivermouth can produce some pretty nice long rights. There’s rarely a crowd here. It’d be a good place to enjoy right now before it becomes more of a spot, as a sunrise surf can mean you have the sea and wave all to yourself.

Iztapa

It may be no surprise that the wave in Iztapa is another river mouth break. The points of the channel create solid lefts and rights. The best is the right from a SW swell in our opinion, off the east side of the channel. It can barrel here in summer months, when the wind drops down and the strong SW ground swells come in from deep in the Pacific.
